ICOS Science Conference 2020 - Themes

The call for the session and side event suggestions has ended.

The overall, overarching theme of the 4th ICOS Science Conference is "Knowledge for shaping the future – understanding our earth's biogeochemical processes”. We welcome all scientists across ICOS disciplines dealing with science and improved methodologies and best practices as well as those working with environmental policies.

Some ideas for suitable session topics that could address the following:
 

Quantifying the effects of actions from Paris Agreement

  • Status of observations related IPCC land use report
  • Vegetation reaction to climate change?
  • How do you verify a large sink?
  • Changes in agriculture and forestry
  • Biophysical effects

Carbon budgets and RECCAP-2 moving to regional carbon cycle assessments

The overarching science behind the EU Green report: “(Future) role of ICOS in Copernicus CO2 monitoring system”

Scientific overview of different methods

  • How to observe fossil fuel emissions in cities, regions or hotspots
  • Points of uncertainty links with meteorology (science of measurements) or meteorology (atmospheric science)

Innovation in observation techniques

  • TCCON (Total Column Observations from the Ground) community
  • FTIR observations
  • LiDAR Laser Scanning of forest
  • Feasibility and cost of using Autonomous OO (Ocean Obs) technologies using ASV (Autonomous Surface Vehicles) and USV (Unmanned surface Vehicles) (i.e. Autonauts, Gliders Saildrones…)

Small or lateral fluxes: river flows, lake emissions, white ribbons

  • Feasibility of the observations, obstacles related to large scale comprehensive monitoring
  • Modelling accuracy, coverage

MRV (Measure, report, verify)

  • Carbon sequestration in soils and developed monitoring systems to verify this
