ICOS has a strong observational network producing reliable, high quality data. As a highly distributed research infrastructure, the operations and the measurement station network require coordination and continuous development. Head of Unit, Operations

The person will be heading the Operations Unit at the ICOS Head Office, leading a team of 5 persons. He or she will report to the Director General of ICOS. The position is full-time and permanent. The ICOS Head Office is located in Kumpula, Helsinki.

The main responsibilities related to this role are:

  • Overall responsibility for the work of the Operations Unit
  • Coordination and development of the operations of the whole ICOS research infrastructure
  • Coordination of the ICOS station network operations and the activities of the Central Facilities, including integration of new stations into the ICOS network.
  • Supporting internal bodies of ICOS, i.e. the Research Infrastructure Committee, and the Measurement Station Assemblies as well as ICOS National Networks
  • Coordination of the development and sustainability of services for the scientific use of ICOS data in close cooperation with other relevant ICOS bodies, as well as management of liaisons with scientific users
  • Annual work planning, and reporting and supporting of the strategic planning and budgeting

To succeed in this role

A successful candidate should have a strong background in Earth System Science; a university degree, preferably a PhD or similar experience. She or he should also have excellent managerial, process, and prioritizing skills. Moreover, the position requires not only an ability to see the bigger picture, but also outstanding leadership and negotiation skills, for example, to integrate different interests among the different bodies of the ICOS research infrastructure. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are useful, as well as independent critical thinking and problem-solving skills. The role also involves writing of reports and preparation of presentations. Fluent spoken and written English are required.
